How Britain can build a world-leading life sciences strategy

Image
Jonathan Michie, University of Oxford - UK The UK is in the midst of a wide-ranging national industrial strategy which will influence the country’s future role in the global economy. The latest proposals look at the life sciences and healthcare sectors, perhaps the areas of this grand plan which will affect most people, including through the successful development – or otherwise – of the National Health Service. Sir John Bell was asked to work on how the UK might exploit its existing strengths in life sciences. His report issues the strong recommendation that research and development (R&D) spending should rise from 1.6% of GDP to 2.6% over the next five years – putting the UK in the top quartile worldwide. He also wants the UK to create two or three entirely new industries in the next decade, while increasing by 50% the number of clinical trials, and attracting capital investment for large and small manufacturing facilities. The plan is for the UK to e...

Elon Musk releases details of plan to colonise Mars – here's what a planetary expert thinks

Image
By Andrew Coates, UCL   Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, has released new details of his vision to colonise parts of the solar system, including Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa and Saturn’s moon Enceladus. His gung ho plans – designed to make humans a multi-planetary species in case civilisation collapses – include launching flights to Mars as early as 2023. The details, just published in the journal New Space, are certainly ambitious. But are they realistic? As someone who works on solar system exploration, and the European Space Agency's new Mars rover in particular, I find them incredible in several ways. First of all, let’s not dismiss Musk as a Silicon Valley daydreamer. He has had tremendous success with rocket launches to space already. His paper proposes several interesting ways of trying to get to Mars and beyond – and he aims to build a “self-sustaining city” on the red planet. Musk outlining initial plans ...

Ten ways that astronauts are helping you stay healthy

Image
Nick Caplan, Northumbria University, Newcastle and Andrew Winnard, Northumbria University, Newcastle   Astronauts on the International Space Station are growing crystals that could help develop new drugs for use on Earth. Here are ten healthcare technologies that have already come from space: 1. Robots that can remove brain tumours Developed in Canada during the Space Shuttle era, Canadarm2 is a robotic arm that is attached to the outside of the International Space Station. It is used for many tasks outside the space station to avoid astronauts having to complete high-risk space walks. This technology led to the creation of neuroArm, that can perform precision surgery inside MRI scanners, such as removing brain tumours. neuroArm in action. 2. Eye trackers used in laser eye surgery In space, the lack of gravity changes the way the eyes move and perceive motion. High-tech eye trackers were developed ...

Five amazing ultrasound inventions set to change the world (and not a pregnancy scan in sight)

Image
By    Andrew Feeney, University of Warwick Ultrasound can do a whole lot more than create images of unborn babies. Since it first became a near-indispensable medical tool in the 1930s, technology that produces sound waves so high-pitched that humans can’t hear them has found use in almost every branch of industry. The vibrations it creates can kill bacteria, weld plastics and even help to mature brandies in a matter of days rather than years. Today, ultrasound is finding its way into even more applications, powering inventions that have the potential to make huge changes in their fields. Here are just a few of them: 1. Truly hands-free phones We are on the brink of a real contactless alternative to touch-screen technology. Devices like the Microsoft Kinect can detect where your hands are and use that information as instructions. But placing your hands in exactly the right place to give the instructions you wa...
